Even with a switch in play-calling, and perhaps one in scheme, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales didn't want to reveal much about his team's game plan moving forward.
Canales chatted with reporters following practice on Tuesday, and fielded more questions about the state of the defense following Friday's firing of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. And with Evero, who ran a 3-4 front, now gone, Canales was asked if he Panthers plan on running a 4-3 from now on.
"I won't get into scheme and all that," he replied. "But we're built to be a 3-4 team."
Evero's dismissal has led to the promotion of now-former defensive line coach Todd Wash, who will serve as the interim defensive coordinator starting here in Week 9. Wash, in his time as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville
Jaguars from 2016 to 2020, implemented a 4-3 base.
Nonetheless, Canales wouldn't tip their hand.
"We're built to play a certain way. That's the talent that we have," he later added. "Our commitment is to get the best 11 on the field. And I don't wanna really get into the details of it, because we have a game this week. So, we'll keep that to ourselves. But it's safe to say we have a really good, solid room of outside linebackers and pass rushers."
That room features outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips and inside linebacker Devin Lloyd, both of whom were added on big-money deals this past offseason. The two, with Evero and his designs still onboard, signed to a combined $162 million.
