Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales might've left his "baby" in some capable hands.
Albeit in a loss, where the opposing team scored a whopping 59 points, the Panthers registered a pretty impressive 37 points in Sunday's opener. The maestro behind that output was offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, who served as a play-caller in an NFL regular-season game for the first time.
Canales, the offensive play-caller in his first two years at the helm in Carolina, was asked what he thought of Idzik's performance.
"I thought the rhythm was good," replied Canales, who bestowed the duties upon Idzik this offseason. "Getting us into concepts that we're comfortable with and finding some explosive plays—while they were infrequent, there wasn't a lot of them—we
found some and we moved the ball.
"I was really pleased with the way Brad managed the calls—got it in in timely fashion and made it cohesive for the offense and for Bryce [Young] and all that."
The Panthers finished the afternoon with 478 total yards. Much of that came courtesy of Young, who passed for 361 yards and three touchdowns in the defeat to the Chicago Bears.
Young was also asked about Idzik after the game.
"Brad did a great job," Young told reporters. "I thought that the communication was great, on-the-sideline communication was great. I think he did a greta job calling it. It's on us to make some more stuff come to life for him."
Young's 361 passing yards were the second-most of his four-year NFL career. His most (448) came last season in Atlanta—where he, Idzik and Canales will be next Sunday for their second outing of the campaign.
