A local legend and former Carolina Panthers cornerback will officially be calling it quits.

According to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Stephon Gilmore is set to retire from the NFL as a member of the New England Patriots on Friday. The 35-year-old, who turns 36 on Saturday, spent one of his 13 pro campaigns with the Panthers.

That season came in 2021, after Gilmore was traded by New England to Carolina in exchange for a sixth-round pick. He'd appear in eight games for the Panthers, amassing 16 tackles and a pair of interceptions en route to his fifth and final Pro Bowl selection.

Before coming over to Charlotte, the Rock Hill, S.C. native and University of South Carolina standout was named a two-time first-team All-Pro and the 2019 AP Defensive

Player of the Year while with the Patriots. He was also a member of their Super Bowl LIII team, who toppled the Los Angeles Rams for the franchise's sixth Lombardi Trophy.

Gilmore last played in 2024—where he made 16 starts‚ including playoffs, for the Minnesota Vikings.
