A former Carolina Panthers quarterback has found himself a new lane within the NFL.
According to ESPN's Todd Archer, the Dallas Cowboys are hiring Will Grier to their staff. Grier, who abruptly retired from the playing the game last week, will now coach the game as an offensive assistant.
Joe Person of The Athletic reported back in June that Grier had an offer to join the Cowboys on the sidelines earlier this offseason. The 31-year-old passer would instead opt to sign with the Panthers, the team that selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Grier's retirement has left Carolina with three quarterbacks at the start of training camp. Panthers general manager Dan Morgan was asked on Wednesday if he plans on adding back a fourth for the summer.
"No plans right now to bring a fourth guy on," Morgan told reporters. "Obviously, wish Will and his family the best. In terms of his career, just playing as long as he did, and just wish him the best moving forward."
The Panthers' depth chart at the position includes starter Bryce Young, backup Kenny Pickett and undrafted rookie Haynes King.
