Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers have arrived.
Sunday night's 32-26 win over the Detroit Lions showed the world that this team is once again ready to compete, and they have a top-five offense that gives them a chance against anyone they might face.
Aside from another poor performance in the trenches, Carolina's offense was almost perfect—with Young, wideout Tetairoa McMillan and running back Chuba Hubbard in starring roles. Receivers Brycen Tremayne and John Metchie III and the tight ends chipped in here and there, while inside linebacker Devin Lloyd had another spectacular game on defense.
All together, the Panthers deserve an 'A-' for the win, according to John Breech at CBS Sports. Breech writes:
The Panthers offense is starting to look
unstoppable. Carolina has surrounded Bryce Young with some weapons and he showed the Lions that he knows how to use them . . . The defense still has a few issues and Ryan Fitzgerald needs to make his extra points, but the Panthers just showed a national TV audience why they might be a dangerous team this year.
Young paced the attack completing 29 of his 41 throws for 329 yards and two touchdowns. McMillan was on the receiving end of 14 of those completions, 192 of those yards and both scores while Hubbard rushed for a season-high 122 yards and two touchdowns of his own.
The Panthers, heading out of Week 4, rank fourth in total offense and fourth in scoring offense.
There are definitely weaknesses to be found, though. Even after stuffing running back Jahmyr Gibbs, the Panthers still rank last in rushing yards allowed per game, and they have managed just eight sacks through four games. The secondary also looks pretty vulnerable with cornerback Akayleb Evans in the starting lineup.
On special teams, there's no dynamic returner to be found with Coker on the sidelines—and Fitzgerald, who missed a pair of extra points on Sunday, has to tighten back up.
All that being said, whatever flaws the Panthers have can be easily covered up by an elite scoring unit.
