The Carolina Panthers' roster has been ravaged by injuries, their expensive offensive line is falling apart and their defense is once again near the bottom against the run. And yet, fans have to be feeling better than they have in seven years—because their team has finally found their guy at quarterback.
Bryce Young is in the middle of his long-awaited breakthrough season. His last start versus the Detroit Lions proved that he's ready to compete against, and even beat serious contenders without the greatest of help around him.
Going into the bye week, Young led the NFL in passing yards and ranked in the top five in many passing metrics. At this rate, the price on his next contract is going to go up every week—as Nick Shook at NFL.com reminded
us in his latest power rankings:
Carolina enjoyed the bye after a remarkable victory over the Lions on the Sunday night stage. Bryce Young's future contract is only getting more expensive with each outing, a good problem to have for a franchise that once worried it might have to go quarterback shopping again. A road date with the Eagles and a return home for a divisional showdown with Tampa Bay await.
My steak is too juicy. My lobster too buttery. That's the kind of problem this is after nearly a decade of mediocrity and inconsistency at the game's most important position.
The biggest difference for Young this year is simple—he's making better decisions with the ball and he's doing it at a much faster rate than any other previous season with the Panthers.
A good deal of the credit has to go to offensive coordinator Brad Idzik. But Young was always capable of this kind of play, it just took time and the right circumstances to bring it out of him.
So if Young is indeed this form of himself moving forward, then the increasing price will have to be worth it for the Panthers.
