When the 2026 schedule came out, the Carolina Panthers' fanbase groaned over the early bye week. You never know how a season is going to go, though.
As it turns out, that the Week 5 break is exactly what this team needed. The reset has given the team a chance to get a bit healthier as they deal with a slew of injuries to more than a handful of key players.
Oh, and the bye also improved their standing in the NFC South. Thanks to the Sunday night loss by the Atlanta Falcons, the Panthers are now all alone atop the division by half a game (and a head-to-head tiebreaker).
So, let's see where Carolina stands in the NFL power rankings going into Week 6 . . .

Take: Maybe you realized they come out of their bye week with the league's
top-ranked passing offense. But did you know how diverse it was, WR Tetairoa McMillan headlining a quintet of Panthers who already have double-digit receptions?

Take: Carolina enjoyed the bye after a remarkable victory over the Lions on the Sunday night stage. Bryce Young's future contract is only getting more expensive with each outing, a good problem to have for a franchise that once worried it might have to go quarterback shopping again. A road date with the Eagles and a return home for a divisional showdown with Tampa Bay await.

Take: With Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) on IR, the Panthers enter Week 6 with rookie Will Lee III and special teams ace Akayleb Evans penciled in as their starting cornerbacks. In their Week 4 win over the Lions, Evans allowed 12 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown (on 16 targets), according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Lee had a better outing (four catches allowed for 47 yards on seven targets). The Panthers could use some help at the position or a significant switch-up in the starting lineup. Chau Smith-Wade, a 2024 fifth-round pick, is an option.

Take: Tetairoa McMillan was incredible in the Panthers’ impressive win over the Lions, notching 14 catches on 16 targets for 192 yards and two touchdowns. With Bryce Young playing better and McMillan continuing to develop (and Jalen Coker emerging), the future is starting to look bright in Carolina.

Take: The Carolina Panthers didn't need to do a thing this past weekend to move into sole possession of first place in the NFC South. Currently, Carolina is the only team in the division without a losing record. Plus, the Panthers' next two opponents currently own losing records, with two weeks to specifically prepare for the Philadelphia Eagles. As always, the bye week provides an opportunity for a roster to get healthy. Carolina could receive significant boosts with defensive end Jaelan Phillips, rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling, guard Damien Lewis and wide receiver Jalen Coker likely back after being dinged in recent weeks. Veteran right tackle Taylor Moton and defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton may be taken off injured reserve as well.
