Playing in the NFL comes with a surefire injury rate. It doesn't matter which position you play, how well you train or how much care you take of your body—it's going to happen sooner or later.
Unfortunately, it sometimes happen before the season even begins.
Such is the case for Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear in the team's first outing of training camp on Thursday. The second-year pass rusher would be carted off the practice field in a grim scene, and was officially placed on injured reserve this morning.
Scourton was coming off an impressive rookie campaign, where he tied for a team-leading 5.0 sacks. He was supposed to play a big role for the Panthers defense in 2026, projected as the starting
edge rusher next to free-agent acquisition Jaelan Phillips.
Well, as the saying goes, if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans. It sounds like Scourton is taking a similar mentality as he begins his rehab.

Internally, a huge opportunity now awaits for fellow 2025 pick and edge rusher Princely Umanmielen. If he can force his way past Pat Jones II on the depth chart, he could end up seeing a heavy snap count as a starter.
However, the Panthers will probably have to seek some outside help to make up for Scourton's loss.
