The Carolina Panthers have brought back a familiar face (and a speedy pair of legs) this afternoon.
As announced on Tuesday, the team has signed wideout Ihmir Smith-Marsette to their practice squad. The 27-year-old receiver and return specialist spent the 2023 campaign as a member of the Panthers.
That season saw Smith-Marsette appear in a career-high 17 games. He recorded eight receptions for 51 yards and a league-leading 37 punt returns for 322 yards and a touchdown.
Smith-Marsette's last regular-season appearance came for the New York Giants in 2024, where he fielded 29 punts for 228 return yards.
After parting ways with wideout Jimmy Horn Jr., the Panthers turned to fellow receiver Jalen Coker as their punt returner in Week 2—where he brought
back a pair of punts for a total of 49 yards. Smith-Marsette could give Carolina another option in that role.
To make room on the practice squad for Smith-Marsette, the team released rookie wide receiver E.J. Williams—who was added last week.
