One of the biggest x-factors for the Carolina Panthers this coming season will be their wideouts, and how much they have grown since last year.
For the first time in the post-Steve Smith era, the Panthers have a legitimate No. 1 receiver (all due respect to DJ Moore) in the form of 2025 Offensive Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan. That's about where the sure things end, though.
The Panthers do have several promising young options behind him, it's just that they are all relatively unproven at this level.
So, where does Carolina's corps rank compared to the rest of the league? According to Jared Dubin at CBS Sports, they are 21st going into the 2026 campaign. Dubin writes:
Tetairoa McMillan showed his immense potential as a rookie despite questionable
quarterback play. Jalen Coker is solid, too, and earned himself a contract extension after working his way up the depth chart as a former undrafted free agent. This is another group with questionable depth beyond the top two, though, especially after Chris Brazzell II's injury.
Losing Brazzell for the season was an undeniable bummer, but strong preseason performances from John Metchie III and Jimmy Horn Jr. take some of the sting out of that blow. Metchie finished the preseason as Carolina's most productive receiver (129 yards and a touchdown) while Horn showed off his speed as a pass catcher, a ball carrier and returner.
If Coker can stay healthy and play a full 17 games, especially avoiding any further soft tissue injuries, it will help a great deal. Getting literally anything positive from 2024 first-rounder Xavier Legette, in what will be a make-or-break third season for his NFL career, would also be an encouraging development.
If those swing factors work in their favor, the Panthers' receivers should finish the regular season ranked no lower than the middle of the pack— perhaps 15th or 16th. From there, they may just need one more piece to complete the puzzle in 2027 and beyond.
