After two brilliant games to begin the season for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, we expected a little bit of a drop-off against a tough Cleveland Browns defense.
Well, we got that and more—as the Panthers lost a frustrating (and winnable) game on Sunday afternoon, 21-18. Young's stats suffered thanks to poor pass protection and a bad wide receiver situation, but he still managed to put up 291 passing yards to go with one touchdown, one interception and a 70.7 passer rating.
Let's see where Young ranks statistically after three weeks of action . . .
- Completion rate: 59.5% (26th)
- Passing yards: 939 (first)
- First downs: 46 (second)
- Yards per attempt: 7.8 (ninth)
- Passing touchdowns: seven (tied for fifth)
- 20+ yard passes: 13 (tied for first)
- Passer rating: 96.4 (22nd)
- QBR: 68.6 (11th)
- EPA/play: 0.159 (13th)
- Success rate: 44.9 percent (22nd)
- CPOE: 4.5 percent (tied for ninth)
- Air yards: 9.6 (tied for fifth)
There are still a lot of strong numbers here—and it's especially impressive to see him on top in passing yards given how bad the pass blocking has been in each game for the Panthers.
So far,
he's taken seven sacks, which is too high—but almost entirely on the offensive line and not on Young. Perhaps best of all, Young has not fumbled once yet this season and his two picks were both understandable—with one being a great defensive play and the other coming as he pressed at the very end of a game.
Next up are the Detroit Lions, who are allowing more passing yards per game (299.3) than any team this year.
