The first start of the season for Carolina Panthers cornerback Akayleb Evans was a pretty rough one.
With Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson having both been placed on injured reserve this past week, Evans was one of two new starters in Carolina's defensive backfield last night. While the Panthers held on for a 32-26 victory
over the Detroit Lions, the 27-year-old Evans struggled mightily in coverage throughout the evening.Head coach Dave Canales spoke with reporters on Monday, and was asked about the secondary's performance.
"I would say, by and large, [Akayleb] did a really good job," Canales stated. "He gave up some big plays. He'd be up here telling you there's a few opportunities that he would love to have back to play differently.
"I was able to
connect with him on the sideline and just be like, 'Look, this is a great opportunity. You've given up a few plays, you know they're gonna come back here. So just be ready for the next opp—because you're gonna get that.'"
According to Pro Football Focus, Detroit came Evans' way 14 times. And over those 14 targets, he was charged with allowing 11 receptions for a combined 197 yards and a touchdown.
Evans' partner, rookie Will Lee III, fared a bit better in his first start. The fourth-round pick gave up four catches for 53 yards on six targets.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff finished having thrown for a season-high 412 yards on 52 attempts. Goff's 412 passing yards now stand as the most the Panthers have relinquished thus far in 2026.
