Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks is officially back on the shelf.
As announced by the team on Wednesday, Brooks has been placed on injured reserve due to a lingering groin issue. Reports from earlier in the morning have indicated that the third-year rusher is set to undergo surgery on the core muscle injury and will be sidelined for at least six weeks.
Per head coach Dave Canales, Brooks re-aggravated the groin tweak that popped up at the end of the summer. The setback kept the former second-round pick out of the final days of training camp.
Brooks did end up playing in both games to start the regular season, rushing for 30 yards on nine carries and reeling in two receptions for a combined 43 yards.
To fill the void left behind by
Brooks' placement, the Panthers have signed safety and 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Simmons to the active roster. Simmons, who was elevated from the practice squad in Weeks 1 and 2, has recorded 49 of his 54 snaps on special teams thus far.
In addition, linebacker Maema Njongmeta has been brought back to take Simmons' spot on the practice squad.
