Leaving on his terms, Russell Westbrook rode off into the sunset. He announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday. While the news shouldn't be a shocker to most, the entire sports world has spent its afternoon paying tribute to his stacked career.
Westbrook played in 18 NBA seasons. His first 11 were on the Oklahoma City Thunder. At his first basketball home, that's where he made a name for himself and should eventually make the Hall of Fame. He became one of the NBA's defining stars of the 2010s.
Alongside Kevin Durant, Westbrook co-headlined OKC's first title contender. The superstar duo had one NBA Finals trip and four Western Conference Finals appearances. On an individual level, Westbrook collected his sole MVP trophy with the Thunder.
He was also a perennial All-Star and All-NBA member.
Westbrook completely redefined the triple-double achievement. After 55 years since Oscar Robertson averaged that for a whole season, he did it four times in a five-year span. Most of OKC's franchise records remain under his name. He's universally viewed as one of the three best players in franchise history.
Someone who was along for Westbrook's whole ride in OKC was Sam Presti. The Thunder GM added him with the No. 4 pick of the 2008 NBA draft. It was one of the decision-maker's savviest decisions in his almost two decades' worth of work. He released a statement to react to the 37-year-old's decision to hang up his sneakers for good.
"Russell Westbrook is the ultimate competitor," Presti wrote. "His internal belief and unbridled fearlessness helped establish the foundation of our organization from day one in 2008 and he elevated the confidence and inspired our community in every year thereafter."
Nearly a decade since Westbrook was traded, his connection with Thunder fans remains strong. Anytime he showed up at Paycom Center in the opposition's uniform, he heard booming applause. Scouring the lower-bowl crowd, you can spot his OKC jersey on every other fan.
"Russell will be as successful in his life after basketball as he was during his career because his qualities and gifts transfer. His impact on our community is still felt today, and he is beloved for his devotion as much as his talent," Presti continued. "He built a Hall of Fame career not by making statements or simply by breaking records, he did it by showing us all the power of asking one simple question: Why Not?”
