In the dog days of summer, this is when NBA players make the most progress in their games. These couple of months of quietness are a nice breather from the usually busy calendar year filled with playing and traveling on an every-other-night basis.
Chet Holmgren has used these sizzling August days to link up with other NBA players. He once again participated in a 'PLYRS UNTD' run with other notable names — such as teammate Jared McCain. The NBPA-sanctioned runs allow players to match up in low-stress indoor hooping sessions.
In his social media highlight reel, Holmgren flexed his on-ball creation creativity. On one possession, he went coast-to-coast and blew by Tari Eason to throw down a one-handed jam. On another possession, he pump-faked his way
into the mid-range and drilled a pull-up jumper in front of Trae Young's grill.
The Oklahoma City Thunder hope Holmgren can bring some of those self-scoring looks to the 2026-27 regular season and NBA playoffs. One of the reasons why they fell short of their back-to-back ambitions is his scoring dip in the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
Even though Holmgren enjoyed a breakout season as a first-time All-Star, All-NBA and Defensive Player of the Year runner-up, he's faced plenty of scrutiny this summer for his subpar playoff series against Victor Wembanyama. That's going to hover over him until the results are different.
