Otega Oweh hopes to follow OKC's 'blueprint' toward NBA success

The pathway to being an NBA player is extremely thin. And it's even skinnier if you're on a two-way deal. On borrowed time, you only have about two-thirds of the regular season to show you belong. If not, then teams will cycle through the fickle roster spot without a second thought.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have had a long lineage of successful two-way players — Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, Ajay Mitchell. Otega Oweh is trying to be the latest addition to that group.

The Thunder added Oweh with the No. 14 pick of the 2026 NBA draft. After two forgettable years at Oklahoma, he redeemed his collegiate career with two explosive scoring seasons at Kentucky. That was enough to boost him into the NBA draft stratosphere.

Back in Oklahoma, Oweh has had his

first taste of pseudo-NBA basketball. Remember, he missed most of the 2026 Summer League with a bum ankle. In two preseason outings, he's had a combined eight points on 4-of-12 shooting and seven rebounds. That said, his offensive production doesn't really matter right now.

Instead, Oweh should put all his energy on defense. That's where his best route to NBA success lies. Two-way players must specialize in one NBA-specific strength. In the 23-year-old's case, it's perimeter defense. And he has the best teachers to show him the ropes. The Thunder have had the league-best defense over the last two years. Becoming a constant-turnover-creating machine en route to game-breaking runs.

"I definitely want to continue to work on my hands," Oweh said. "Because Dub, Caso, AC too, are probably some of the best guys in terms of deflections and stuff like that."

Oweh mentioned that Alex Caruso and Kenrich Williams have been two veteran Thunder teammates who've helped him sharpen up his technique. No question he has the physical tools and motor to be a solid one-on-one defender. It's now about molding that ball of clay into having the experience and smarts to be a high-end defender you trust to slow the opposition.

"That's the blueprint," Oweh said. "I feel like OKC is known for that. All I gotta do is follow the blueprint."

Remains to be seen if Oweh becomes one of OKC's latest developmental success stories. He has about a season to leave a lasting impression. Two-way players typically get much shorter runways to show something compared to their first-round peers.

But from an outsider's perspective, it feels like Oweh has a good head on his shoulders. He understands what the gig is in the NBA and on the Thunder. The early returns have been pretty pedestrian, but once he finds a groove, he should flex his defensive instincts and skill set this upcoming season. Whether at the NBA or G League level.
