Only a month remains in the NBA offseason. The 2026-27 regular season is within eyesight. Over three months since they were booted in the 2026 Western Conference Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder will enter the upcoming year as one of the two title favorites.
Even after a career season, Chet Holmgren will be under the microscope. For some, he's one of the NBA players who has the most at stake. As unfair as that might sound on the surface, that's what happens when you're a complete no-show in a legacy-defining Game 7 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Holmgren enjoyed a breakout year as a first-time All-Star, All-NBA member and All-Defense player. He finished as the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up. Sporting a championship ring, the 24-year-old
has lived up to his hype — and then some — through three seasons.
None of that matters to the general public, though. Holmgren's struggles with Victor Wembanyama were on full blast at a national level. Until the Thunder eventually overcome their Spurs problem, that's going to be an evergreen storyline throughout all of next season. Still, not much you can do about that until then. Instead, he's continued to roll along with his summer.
This is the time of the year when NBA players make their most developmental strides. The offseason moves offer a mellow schedule that allows players to put in serious time in the gym. All without the chaotic nature of the regular-season marathon — where you're either playing or traveling on basically a nightly basis.
Holmgren posted his offseason highlights in a TikTok video. While most rolled their eyes at it, it's important to note that his ascension into one of the league's best two-end players has backed up his usual routine. I get that there's currently a fixation on his skinny frame, but that gets overblown. Just look at his basketball success.
The Thunder hope to have better health luck. The last two years have been plagued by injuries. Two years ago, Holmgren missed three regular-season months with a hip fracture. Last year, Jalen Williams played less than half of the games with constant hamstring strains. He had four in five months at one point. Two on each leg.
Even after the Thunder made a bunch of cost-cutting moves this offseason, they remain a co-title favorite and have a serious shot at being the first seed for a historic fourth year in a row. As long as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is healthy, he's proven to be a 60-win machine by himself.
