The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Wednesday that Otega Oweh has sustained a torn right Achilles tendon. He'll miss the entire 2026-27 season. The 23-year-old had it happen in their preseason win over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.
Oweh has already had surgery to repair it. The procedure was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, with Thunder medical personnel present.
Sadly, this shouldn't be a shocker. Oweh had a non-contact injury in the opening minute of overtime. He immediately grabbed the back of his right ankle. He stayed down for a good minute before he was eventually helped to the Thunder locker room.
Just brutal luck for Oweh. The Thunder added him with the No. 41 pick of the 2026 NBA draft.
It sounds like he's going to remain on one of OKC's three two-way spots. At least for now. Wouldn't be surprised if he's eventually waived to make room for a healthy player. The other two two-way guys are Brooks Barnhizer and Josh Dix.
It'll be a year of rehab for Oweh. Maybe he can stick in OKC and be part of next season's plans. But no denying, this career-altering injury easily derails his NBA ambitions. Especially since he was already a second-round rookie who had offensive question marks.
