Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins Atletico Madrid ownership group

In the latest sign that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an NBA superstar, his venture capital lifestyle has expanded. He joined the Atletico Madrid ownership group. The two-time MVP now has a vested interest in the Spanish soccer club with a small stake in it.

“I’m excited to officially join Atletico de Madrid’s ownership group,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “This is a club with a long-standing presence at the top of European football, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of its future.”

Not a bad soccer club to invest in. Atletico has won 11 La Liga titles — the most of any Spanish club outside of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Most recently, it won one in 2021. I guess Gilgeous-Alexander has that in common with them. After all, he led the Oklahoma

City Thunder to an NBA championship in 2025.

While the full details are unknown, Gilgeous-Alexander adds to a recent trend of NBA superstars dipping their financial toes into the soccer world. He's had an affinity for the sport over the years. Even if just recreationally. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are also all-time OKC legends who have investments in soccer clubs across the globe.

Starting a four-year, $285 million supermax contract extension a season from now, Gilgeous-Alexander is loaded with cash. As long as the Thunder remain in the title picture, that should remain the case. He's one of the era-defining NBA superstars of the 2020s. And is part of the prestigious lineage of basketball pantheons.
