Confident in himself and his brother, Jalen Williams recently made a bold statement in a trivial social media video that has made the rounds. He believes he and Cody Williams are the best brother duo in the NBA.
Part of a game, Williams was asked if he and his brother were better than several notable brother duos in the league — Lonzo and LaMelo Ball; Caleb and Cody Martin; Cam and Pat Spencer; Franz and Mo Wagner; Keegan and Kris Murray; Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo; Julian and Justin Champagnie; Max and Cam Christie; Marvin and Marcus Bagley; Jrue, Aaron and Justin Holiday; Stephen and Seth Curry; Amen and Ausar Thompson.
Williams swiftly answered yes to all of those one-on-one comparisons. Honestly, I respect his reasoning. Of course,
you're going to pick you and your own brother. To make the NBA, you need to have a braggadocious level of self-confidence. Both clearly have it as they were recent NBA draft lottery picks.
Jalen Williams had an unconventional path to being an All-NBA talent and a one-time NBA champion. He helped the Oklahoma City Thunder bring home the Larry O'Brien trophy as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Robin to his Batman. Even with an injury-riddled year last season, the 25-year-old is viewed as one of the best players at his position.
Meanwhile, Cody Williams recently turned the corner. He was a double-digit scorer in the post-All-Star break portion of last year's schedule as the Utah Jazz tanked. He was eventually traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves this offseason. Entering his third season, we'll see if he can have a breakout year in a new NBA home.
I think if you were going to truly rank the two-player brother duos, Jalen and Cody Williams would be somewhere in the middle. One is an All-NBA player and the other still has room to grow. A fun trend I've noticed when scouring the field is that there's usually one All-Star-level brother and one role-player-level brother. Jalen Williams fits the former, while Cody Williams fits the latter.
Regardless, it's always fun to see the brother duos in the NBA. Feels like there's a continuous handful at any given time. And as Williams went through the rundown, he never hesitated to put himself and his younger brother at the top.
