Five days away from Opening Night, the Oklahoma City Thunder were thrown a curveball from an unlikely pitcher on the mound. Aday Mara's NBA status is being threatened by his old stomping grounds. Basket Zaragoza is threatening to take legal action if he suits up for his team.
Basket Zaragoza claims that it has Mara's playing rights from when he first signed with them when he was 16 years old. He developed and played for the Spanish club from 2021-23. Afterward, he went the collegiate route with two years at UCLA and one at Michigan.
Even though Mara hasn't played for Basket Zaragoza in three years, the Spanish club is looking for the Thunder to pay a transfer fee of around $700K. It claims he is under contract with them through the 2026-27 season.
Let's acknowledge the timing of this demand. Basket Zaragoza waited until the preseason ended to release a statement about their demands. I obviously don't know the full details and am painting in broad strokes, but that seems a little nefarious. After all, Mara has been in OKC since June 2026. Why wait four months to make your intentions known? Especially since he's played games for the Thunder already. Albeit, Summer League and preseason.
So, how much jurisdiction does Basket Zaragoza have over the Thunder and the NBA? Not a lot — if any. In Layman's terms, this is like if there were a non-extradition warrant in a far-off county. The NBA doesn't need to follow suit with the Spanish club's league rules. And the Thunder and Mara don't necessarily need to comply with any international lawsuit outside of North America.
Instead, the Thunder and Mara are treating things as business as usual. The 21-year-old is expected to contribute in the 2026-27 regular season and beyond. This is really a nothing-burger of a story. Outside of making this story public — which has already happened — Basket Zaragoza has no other cards to play.
I'm sure something will resolve — one way or the other. The NBA and FIBA have been looped into this Mara legal drama. But the Thunder seem firm in their stance not to pay a penny for the 2026 NBA draft pick. By the time Opening Night rolls around, this will likely be lost in the shuffle.
