Giving back to his fanbase, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has opened up a nonprofit organization. The SGA Foundation will operate in both the United States and Canada as a way to help children and their families. The charity's vision is shaped by the two-time MVP's roots in Ontario, Canada and Oklahoma City.
Of course, Gilgeous-Alexander grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He's been proud of his origins there. And then his NBA superstar meteoric rise happened with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The SGA Foundation will maintain a year-round presence. It plans to open up longstanding programs and impact initiatives set to be announced in Oct. 2026.
In a press statement, Gilgeous-Alexander explained his motivation to begin a nonprofit organization. The 28-year-old
hopes his foundation can help children reach their dreams through three pillars — self-belief, growth and access. He hopes to provides the tools and access for that to materialize.
"I’m here to officially announce the launch of The SGA Foundation, in both Canada and the US," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "We’re building pathways for kids and the families raising them, built on self-belief, growth, and access. This is about making real impact and giving back to the communities that have supported me for so many years."
Among the all-time greats, Gilgeous-Alexander had one of the more unique journeys to being a basketball pantheon. Within the blink of an eye, he went from an intriguing prospect to a two-time MVP winner and one-time NBA champion. He's averaged a superb-efficient 30-plus for four consecutive years — which enters historic territory.
For someone who wasn't even the headliner of the historic 2019 Paul George blockbuster, Gilgeous-Alexander has blossomed into one of the best scorers ever with a decorated resume already good enough to be a first-time Hall-of-Famer. The Thunder will remain in the title picture for the foreseeable future as long as he's in his prime.
Now, Gilgeous-Alexander's legacy could go beyond the court. This latest entrepreneurial venture shows he wants to go beyond just the games with his impact in OKC. We've seen other all-time great Thunder players do the same. Ala Russell Westbrook is helping fund OKC's incoming professional soccer club.
"I've been fortunate to do work in the community for years, from annual visits to children's hospitals, toseasonal givebacks, to basketball camps, and I don't take that for granted," Gilgeous-Alexander continued. "Now,with my own foundation, I have a real platform to do it more intentionally, showing up for these communities inways that are lasting and meaningful, and building something that can support them long after I'm doneplaying."
