Nine years ago on Sept. 25, 2017, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers finished their 40th anniversary tour with a show at the Hollywood Bowl.
The run saw great shows, featuring support acts like Joe Walsh, Chris Stapleton, and Lucinda Williams.
There was no way for anyone to know what would befall the band a week later.
Petty died on Oct. 2 due to "multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity," according to a statement. He suffered from physical ailments such as emphysema, knee problems and had significantly fractured his hip, his family said. Despite the hip injury, he toured for 53 dates, which worsened the fracture.
He was 66. The Heartbreakers did not play together again until reuniting for three
songs last week in Nashville at an awards ceremony with Stapleton singing.
