What is the story about?
On Saturday night, Michigan State football marched into Ann Arbor and took down their rivals, beating Michigan 15 to 6 in a game that Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham referred to earlier in the week as 'MSU's Super Bowl'
to earn their first Big Ten game of the season. Whittingham, who has been under fire this season for what is considered to be a disappointing year for the Wolverines, addressed the media after the loss to try to explain what happened.Below, you can see what Whittingham had to say about the loss, Michigan State, and more:
- On how bad the offense was (0:11): “There’s nothing productive about this game. Zero. It’s not one step back, it’s three steps back. Couldn’t run the ball. Didn’t throw the ball worth a darn. Turned it over four times. Couldn’t make first downs.”
- No positives (0:37): “Really, I can’t come up with one positive offensively in this game. So we’re right back to the drawing board.”
- On MSU’s defense not allowing a touchdown (1:14): “Didn’t allow a touchdown. Don’t think I’ve ever been a part of a game where (we) didn’t allow a touchdown and lost.… They really kicked our butt in time of possession.”
- How he feels (2:00): “As disappointed as I’ve ever been as a head coach and as frustrated as I’ve ever been as a head coach tonight.”
- Asked if he was shocked (2:22): “Right now, I can’t explain it.… They played hard. Give them credit.”
- Asked whether MSU wanted it more (3:08): “Well, the film will tell, but it certainly looked that way at times. It certainly looked that way. And again, that’s my fault for not getting our guys in the right frame of mind.”
- Backing off his “Super Bowl” comment (3:26): “The term ‘it was their Super Bowl’ was talked about by many people before I said it, and I just reiterated it … it makes or breaks their season. And I guess I shouldn’t say that because I can’t speak for them, but they were ready to play tonight. We got their best shot, and they played well enough to win.”
- On MSU’s game plan (2:29): “They had the same game plan everyone has. You know, eat the clock, stay in the huddle forever, try to shorten the game and win it at the end. Although they didn’t have to win it at the end this week.”
- On MSU’s front seven (11:12): “I think their front seven was very physical.… We’ve got to become more physical. There’s no doubt about it, up front.”
