A former Spartans linebacker turned fullback is joining another fellow Spartan star in Kansas City.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, former Michigan State football linebacker Ben VanSumeren is signing with the Kansas City Chiefs one day after he was released by the Buffalo Bills. VanSumeren will officially be signed the Chief's practice squad as a fullback. He will join fellow former Spartans star running back Kenneth Walker III with the Chiefs.
VanSumeren was signed by the Bills in the offseason but was cut by the franchise on Sunday as part of the final cut day for 53-man rosters.
VanSumeren entered the NFL as a linebacker, playing his first two seasons with the Eagles on the defensive side of the ball. He appeared in 20 games across
his first two years with the Eagles, helping them win a Super Bowl in 2025.
Last year, VanSumeren switched to offense as a fullback. His season, though, was cut short on the first play of the new year. He suffered a season-ending injury on the opening kickoff of the 2025 NFL season, which ultimately ended up being his final play with the Eagles.
VanSumeren played two seasons with the Spartans from 2021 to 2022, appearing in 24 games. He started his career at rival Michigan but transferred to Michigan State ahead of the 2021 season.
