Entering his seventh year in the NBA, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels is stepping into a new role for one of the more exciting teams in the league this season. After being selected No. 28 overall in the 2020 draft, the 2024 second-team All-Defense selection has spent his entire career with the T-Wolves, helping lead them to five straight playoff appearances.
While McDaniels' contributions on the court won't look much different than in years past, he has embraced a new identity off the hardwood.
After coming up short in the Western Conference Semifinals against the eventual conference champion San Antonio Spurs, the Wolves stayed busy in the offseason, adding two key offensive pieces in All-Star guard LaMelo Ball and former Golden
State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. With the team littered with youth, length, and athleticism, the former Washington standout spoke on his development as a leader both on and off the court.
"Just being more mature," said McDaniels when asked about where he's seen growth in himself. "Trying to help the young guys, but then also you don't see as many older vets on our team. So just like me, (Anthony Edwards), Melo, really all of us just holding each other accountable, basically not needing those vets but turning into vets ourselves, and just committed to win and knowing what we need to do throughout the season. Through tough times, through good times, and just know how to treat it."

With franchise player and four-time All-Star Anthony Edwards missing 21 games in the regular season last year, the man they call "Slim" saw a major spike in production. McDaniels posted career-high averages in points, blocks, steals, and rebounds as he helped lead his team to the No. 6 seed in a loaded Western Conference. Although adding natural scorers might impact the forward's number on the offensive end, he is still poised to be one of the toughest defensive assignments in the league.
Despite making five straight trips to the postseason, Minnesota has struggled to get over the hump and get into the NBA Finals. After making the Western Conference Finals two out of the last three years, the Wolves' front office made it evident this season that they are looking to go all-in after making some major splashes in the offseason.
Now making the transition from an exciting young prospect to one of the longest-tenured players on the roster, the 6-foot-9 defensive menace aims to be a key piece in helping his organization reach heights they've never been to before. Minnesota is one of five teams to never make an appearance in the NBA Finals, and this year is shaping up to be their best chance in recent memory.
