One of the Washington Huskies' most significant wins on the recruiting trail in the 2027 class was the addition of four-star edge rusher Chaz Gray, who chose Jedd Fisch's program over Clemson and Tennessee.
The 6-foot-4, 250-pound product of St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, New Jersey, is ranked as the No. 456 overall prospect and No. 40 edge rusher in the 2027 class, according to the 247Sports Composite, and is an intriguing fit in defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' scheme.
His frame appears to have plenty of room to add weight, which could hint at a future on the interior as he lines up all over the defensive line at the high school level. However, when he arrives in Seattle, he'll begin his career on the edge where he has the tools needed
to make an early impact in the Big Ten.
On film, Gray displays a relentless motor that helps him get involved consistently against the run and collapse the pocket as a pass rusher, no matter where he's lined up. His long arms help him keep opposing offensive tackles away from his chest, which allows him to set the edge at a high level, while he also shows off great patience when collapsing on read option plays.
With his physicality, size, and football IQ, Gray has intriguing versatility as his career plays out. There's a chance that the Huskies attempt to keep him on the edge, but if he continues to grow and add weight like 2026 signee Derek Colman-Brusa, a move to the interior could be in his future.
No matter where he winds up, Gray looks like a promising piece for defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi and outside linebackers coach Aaron Van Horn to work with as one of three blue-chip commits up front in Fisch's 2027 class, alongside four-star defensive tackles Jon Ioane and Tevita Nonu.
