After missing Washington's Week Six loss to Iowa with a hamstring injury, freshman cornerback Jeron Jones wasted no time showcasing his playmaking abilities in his return to action against Purdue. The return of the young standout was critical for Ryan Walters' defense, as the secondary forced two turnovers against the Boilermakers just a week after giving up three touchdowns in the air to Iowa.
Trailing by 12 midway through the fourth quarter, the Boilermakers were putting together a promising drive in hopes of making it a one-possession game entering crunch time. Those hopes quickly diminished, though, when the former four-star corner came up with a contested interception to help snap Washington's three-game losing streak. The pick marked Jones'
second of the season, as his impressive first season on Montlake continues.
"Swagger," Jedd Fisch said when asked what makes Jones unique. "He has an aura about him that he feels really confident in his play, and he has really good ball skills. So part of that there was, I think he's had two picks so far this season, and I think he had probably two that he got his hands on throughout this year. (He) missed a game or a game and a half due to injury, but you know, even times where he had, let's call it a (pass interference) penalty, or he got beat on a play, there was never a flinch, and that's what you need. You need, obviously, a short, goldfish memory as a DB, but you also need to have that swagger and confidence, and he has that."

In just six games, the preseason Freshman All-American has recorded 19 tackles, half a tackle for loss, and two interceptions, which is tied for the most on the team with safeties Alex McLaughlin and Rylon Dillard-Allen.
After losing starting corners Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock to the NFL after the 2025 season, there were major question marks surrounding the secondary entering the season. The Huskies were able to bring reinforcements with Virginia transfer Emmanuel Karnley and Jones, while returning sophomore Dylan Robinson and third-year Rahshawn Clark at nickel. There have been growing pains along the way, but the trio of corners has proven to have a significant impact when healthy.
It's no secret that Fisch and his staff are more than willing to play first-year players, and Jones is a prime example of why. Along with fellow freshman starters Ramzak Fruean and Derek Colman-Brusa, the future of the Huskies' defense continues to impress on a weekly basis.
