Ja'Lynn Polk persevered through a broken collarbone at the beginning of his Washington Huskies career to become a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Two years later, at 24, the product of Lufkin High School in Texas, who arrived in Seattle as a transfer from Texas Tech in 2021, has retired.
Polk was placed on the New Orleans Saints reserve/retired list on Sunday, bringing an end to what looked to be a promising career when he and two other UW wide receivers, Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan, heard their names called in the 2024 draft.
Despite suffering what looked to be a season-ending injury on the opening drive against Montana in 2021, Polk came back in late November to haul in a 55-yard touchdown against Colorado, before starting against Washington
State to close out the season. He earned the Husky Fever 12th Man of the Year Award at the postseason banquet while a new coaching staff was hired, led by Kalen DeBoer, which proved to unlock his success.

Polk went on to appear in all 28 games under DeBoer and wide receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard, ending his time as a Husky with 115 receptions for 1,967 yards and 16 touchdowns. That production and availability earned Polk the opportunity to be selected with the No. 37 pick by the New England Patriots in the 2024 draft.
However, Polk finished his rookie year with 12 catches for 87 yards and just 2 touchdowns, appearing in less than half of the Patriots' offensive snaps in 2024 as a deep threat option for quarterback Drake Maye. Although some felt that the former Lone Star State native would take another step in year two, he reaggravated a shoulder injury during New England's first preseason game in August 2025.
The Patriots traded their 2024 second-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Saints in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round selection before the NFL trade deadline last season. Polk ultimately never suited up for the NFC South organization and has now made the decision to step away from the game before his third season in the NFL.
