Three weeks into his first year with the Los Angeles Rams
, star cornerback Trent McDuffie is already making his presence felt as one of the top defenders in the NFL. After being traded by the Kansas City Chiefs in March, the two-time Super Bowl champion received a four-year, $124 million contract extension to aid a Rams secondary that showed glaring holes during the postseason, and he's done exactly that.According to Pro Football Focus, the former Washington standout currently holds the highest coverage grade in the league at 91.9. Along with his impressive advanced statistics, McDuffie has ranked inside the top ten for all cornerbacks in interceptions, yards per reception allowed, total pressures, and pass breakups.
Although just a few games
into the season, the Rams' major offseason addition has already squared off against some of the top wide receivers in the NFL, including the likes of Deebo Samuel, Mike Evans, Malik Nabers, and Jaylen Waddle.
Trent McDuffie has recorded 3 more passes defended (7) than completions allowed (4) across 15 targets faced in coverage this season. His 26.7% completion rate allowed is the lowest rate among 85 CBs to have faced at least 10 targets, according to @NextGenStats. pic.twitter.com/a1Q3VzgmRW

According to another PFF report from September 29, McDuffie is one of two corners in the league with a 0.0 passer rating allowed when lined up in man coverage, alongside Travis Hunter. Given the amount of star power that the two-time All-Pro has faced, the numbers he's posted entering Week Four are nearly unheard of.
Following a Sunday night performance against the Denver Broncos where he put up 3 tackles and a pass breakup on a season-high 66 snaps, the 2021 All-Pac-12 First Team honoree already has 7 PBUs on the season and is only six away from his career high of 13.
With the Los Angeles secondary suffering from injuries to cornerback Jaylen Watson and safety Kamren Kinchens, the star corner will have to continue to perform at an elite level to help pull his team out of a 1-2 hole to start the season. The Rams take a cross-country trip this weekend to take on the Philadelphia Eagles.
