After a successful first season with the Washington Huskies, defensive coordinator Ryan Walters was reportedly one of the hottest names on the market among teams looking to revamp their defense.
However, after leading the Huskies to the nation's No. 12 rushing defense, No. 15 scoring defense, and No. 21 total defense during the 2025 campaign, he chose to sign an extension to remain in Seattle, while Tennessee was the top candidate to steal him from Jedd Fisch's staff; the Huskies had an edge that the Volunteers couldn't compete with.
"The setup here is unique for me specifically," Walters said on Friday. "My parents live here. My mother-in-law lives with us, my brother lives here, my grandma lives here; it feels like home. And I've got two young
boys that are 12 and 10. And the first little league game we went to out here, we had more people at that game than we ever did anywhere else. And it's because Seattle feels like home. They're definitely having a good time here. So that played a factor into it."
Walters was also quick to give a lot of credit to Fisch for several key messages the head coach has pushed in his program: culture and NFL ties.
"This is Jedd Fisch. I am learning a lot of ball from Jedd Fisch, and I'm learning a lot about the way he operates as a head coach, the way he's structured the program, and really, like, talks. He says things and then follows through with them. He talks about being a pro. Everything we do is at a pro level and is structured like a professional team. So you have that structure, which I really appreciate. The staff here is unbelievable. It's the best staff I've been on, not only from Xs and Os and moral compass, but we also have really high chemistry. And we hang out with each other when we're away from the building. You know what I mean? So that also played a factor into it.
"And then last but not least, probably the most deciding factor because, obviously, it's a results-driven business, you want to win. And as a coach, you can't win without players. So the guys that we had coming back, the guys that we were able to add in the offseason... I would be crazy to leave this place. So I was just happy that we were able to get that done, and hopefully I'm here for a long time."
