Jedd Fisch doesn't like deeming a winner of the day between the offense and defense from Washington Huskies' fall camp.
"You're not going to win every play. I love all the, 'Hey, the defense won this, the offense won that,'" the head coach said after Tuesday's practice. "It's really not that at all until you go back and look at how the game was being played; that makes the decision on who's winning what drill."
While Fisch was quick to compliment the defense for its effort and physicality, Washington's quarterbacks had by far their best day.
One of the biggest plays of the day came from a very familiar duo, as Demond Williams Jr. connected with wide receiver Dezmen Roebuck for a 25-yard touchdown on the final play of practice. The throw (shown
below) was a perfectly placed ball on the Freshman All-American's back shoulder to beat junior nickelback Rahshawn Clark.
"That guy's elite," Williams said of Roebuck after practice. "He goes up and gets it with the best of them, and for a guy of his stature, it's super impressive. Definitely, the way that he maneuvers his body during catches is super impressive."

It was also arguably the best practice of sophomore quarterback Dash Beierly's young career, as the former three-star recruit did an impressive job layering throws into tight windows between multiple defenders all day long while working mainly with the third team offense.
His best throw came on a 35-yard touchdown on a post route to receiver Chris Lawson, who was interfered with by freshman defensive back Ksani Jiles on the play, but he also established a strong connection with the freshman tandem of Jordan Clay and Trez Davis, completing a 20-yard hole shot up the far sideline to the former, and a 19-yard catch-and-run touchdown to the latter.
Following a day off on Wednesday, the Huskies are set to strap on full pads for the first time this fall on Thursday. Here are some other notes from Montlake.
Fall camp notebook
- Freshman outside linebacker Ramzak Fruean continues to be one of the biggest stories of camp. The explosive pass rusher was a disruptive force while taking reps with the first-team defense, which led to some high praise from Fisch.
- "He's grown everywhere," the head coach said. "He's grown 20 pounds, he's grown in maturity, he's grown in understanding how to practice, he's grown in understanding the value of being a great teammate. And on top of that, as he continues to work with (outside linebackers) coach (Aaron) Van Horn, (defensive coordinator Ryan Walters), (defensive line) coach (Jason) Kaufusi, pass rushing has gotten better. He understands how to set the edge, gotten better. Understanding how to stay away from the quarterback in practice has gotten a lot better. So, every part of Ramzak and his maturity, I think when you watch him run, when you watch him make plays, I think I've seen an interception from him, a fumble recovery from him. And I can't imagine he's not gonna be a force on special teams."
- Fruean wasn't alone in being a disruptive presence on the edge, as his classmate, freshman JD Hill, made his way into the backfield several times during team periods while working with the second unit.
- As senior Landen Hatchett continues to rehab from the broken wrist he suffered in late October, and his brother Geirean works his way back from an arm injury from spring practice, Fisch dubbed Sam Houston State transfer Kolt Dieterich as the first-team center for the time being.
- After rejoining the team on Sunday, fifth-year defensive lineman Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei made his way onto the field for his first 11-on-11 reps.
- One of the better plays of practice came from sophomore linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, who, during a 9-on-9 drill, came up behind fifth-year wide receiver Christian Moss on a catch-and-run and ripped the ball out of his hands from behind, forcing the Kennesaw State transfer to run a lap.
