As good as Washington's defensive line has been through the early parts of the season, their toughest assignments still lie ahead. In three games, the Huskies have generated 8 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and generated a havoc rate of 22.9 percent, good for No. 9 in the nation, according to CFBTrack. Now, their Big Ten matchup is ahead in the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who boast one of the most experienced offensive line units in the conference.
From left to right along the starting line, the Gophers feature junior left tackle Nathan Roy, senior left guard Greg Johnson, a pair of fifth-year seniors in center Ashton Beers and right guard Tony Nelson, along with sophomore right tackle Daniel Shipp at right tackle. All five starters have spent their
entire career at Minnesota, a nod to head coach P.J. Fleck and his ability to retain talent at critical positions.
The experienced group has allowed just three sacks in as many games this season, with two of the three coming in a 38-13 loss against Mississippi State in Week Two, but it's not just the passing game that makes this matchup a tough task for Ryan Walters' front seven. Out of the four ball carriers to have ten or more carries for Minnesota, three of them have an average of over four yards per rush, including TJ Thomas, who boasts a staggering 7.5 yards per carry on 23 rushes this season to go with a team-leading 173 yards on the ground.
For Washington's defensive line, they return a veteran of their own in senior Elinneus Davis, who has missed the last two games due to a minor injury. Coming out of high school, the three-star prospect chose the Huskies over Iowa State and Minnesota back in 2023, and now, the Moorhead, Minnesota, native is slated to return against his home-state team and be another key piece in the Huskies' deep rotation of interior linemen.
Strength in numbers has proved to be critical for Washington in the trenches; Davis will be joined by transfers Darin Conley, DeSean Watts, and Kai McClendon, along with freshman phenom Derek Colman-Brusa. On the edge, the depth has also shown up with starters Ramzak Fruean and Jacob Lane being backed by veteran pass rushers Russell Davis II and Isaiah Ward. Altogether, the quartet of edge rushers has combined for 29 tackles this season.
Since he arrived at Montlake, Jedd Fisch has emphasized the importance of having the bodies capable of competing against Big Ten offensive lines. Less than three years later, his front seven has the potential to be one of the most daunting groups in the conference, and it will have the chance to prove it against one of the most established and consistent programs in the Big Ten.
