For the second straight day, another NFL team has stolen a player away from the Washington Commanders. On Monday evening, the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks signed undrafted rookie running back Robert Henry Jr. off Washington’s practice squad. For another team to poach a player off your practice squad, it must sign that player to its 53-man roster.
On Tuesday, the Commanders saw another player depart their practice squad for another team’s 53-man roster, as the Pittsburgh Steelers signed cornerback Terell Smith.
Washington signed the 27-year-old Smith to its practice squad on Sept. 1, after the Bears released him during their final cuts. Smith, 27, entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2023 NFL Draft
out of the University of Minnesota.
In his first two seasons, Smith appeared in 26 games for the Bears, making six starts, and finished with 68 tackles, including four for loss, 10 passes defensed and one interception. Smith tore his patellar tendon last summer, and he missed the entire 2025 season. The knee injury derailed Smith’s progress with the Bears.
The Commanders currently have five cornerbacks on their 53-man roster: Amik Robertson, Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau, Mike Sainrisil, and Isaac Yiadom. Washington initially had Smith and Yiadom on its practice squad and chose to sign the veteran Yiadom to the 53-man roster.
