You've seen it many times: an athlete is so excited to have won a big game, and he praises Jesus Christ or God the Father for the victory.
On Sunday, Washington Commanders’ second-year receiver and returner Jaylin Lane caught and returned a second-half kickoff, and when he was tackled, he immediately, without hesitation, reached down and grabbed his lower leg. Viewers who noticed recognized that the immediacy of Lane’s reaction suggested sudden, intense pain. Secondly, he was subsequently transported off the field.
After the game, head coach Dan Quinn said Lane had a “severe ankle injury,” and he’ll have more details once Lane returns to Virginia. But having watched many NFL games for five decades, it certainly would not surprise me to learn Lane suffered
a broken bone in his lower leg, and will be out for the remainder of the 2026 season.
On Sunday night, Lane (who returned two punts for touchdowns in 2025) posted the following on Instagram:

Why did Lane reference these three verses from the Gospel According to Matthew, chapter 10? The speaker in the verse is Jesus teaching his followers. What was Jesus communicating to his followers? And why does Lane see it as so important on such a disappointing day for Lane?
Jesus was instructing them that every day, good and bad events occur. Good for some people, bad for others. Every day, even things that seem so insignificant, like a little sparrow falling to the ground, occur, and not one of these 'insignificant' things goes unnoticed by the all-knowing, all-caring God of the universe.
Lane acknowledges that he believes Jesus was correct in saying God even cares about trivial things like the hairs on our head being numbered, turning gray, or even falling out. Lane is saying that if God cares that much about the smallest birds, and if God cares about such insignificant things as the number of hairs on a human’s head, how much more must God care for Lane in his painful football injury today?
Consequently, Jaylin Lane is publicly, while in the midst of severe pain and disappointment, proclaiming that he trusts not only in the power of the God of the universe, but in the love of his heavenly Father. Because God's care is this meticulous and this sincere, Lane is saying, though he has suffered a bad setback, there is no need for him to live life in fear, as if God’s love and promises to those who are his children, are no longer true.
It’s really quite the mature statement by the young man who played his college ball at Virginia Tech. He is saying he is learning that this was God’s will for him today, and that he is accepting God's providential decree and care for him in these circumstances. He is saying he wants to learn and grow in adult maturity to trust God not only in NFL success but also despite painful injury and disappointment.
It’s one thing to announce our trust in God in the victories and mountaintops of life. Isn’t it much more to announce trust in God in the losses and low valleys of life?
