The Washington Commanders remained busy on Tuesday, filling out their roster. Earlier on Tuesday, Washington officially announced the signing of four players from outside the organization to their practice squad. The most notable addition was longtime NFL cornerback Isaac Yiadom.
The signing gave Washington 16 players, meaning it could add one more as long as the organization had a player in the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. Undrafted rookie Jeffrey M’ba qualified for the international program, meaning the Commanders had one open spot remaining.
General manager Adam Peters didn’t wait long to fill that spot, signing cornerback Terell Smith to the practice squad.
Smith, 27, entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Chicago Bears
in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Minnesota. The 6-foot-0, 207-pound Smith was waived on Sunday as a part of Chicago's final roster cuts.

In his first two seasons, Smith appeared in 26 games for the Bears, making six starts, and finished with 68 tackles, including four for loss, 10 passes defensed and one interception. Smith tore his patellar tendon last summer and he missed the entire 2026 season.
Smith’s addition gives the Commanders more flexibility in the cornerback room, as they now have two experienced players. Starter Trey Amos will begin the season on the reserve/injured list, meaning he will miss at least four games. Washington currently has Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau on the active roster, but could elevate Yiadom or Smith if needed once the season begins.
