Washington Commanders fans, Redskins fans, I have a very good Christmas gift idea for you.
Mike Richman has written The Washington Pro Football Encyclopedia: Redskins and Commanders. I have a copy of Richman’s book, and it’s likely the most comprehensive account of the Redskins/Commanders franchise.

Communicating briefly with Richman, he explained, “The impetus for writing this book was the Commanders’ remarkable success in the 2024 season, when rookie quarterback
Jayden Daniels led them to a 12-5 regular-season record and the NFC championship game. Nearly two decades had passed since publication of my first edition, The Redskins Encyclopedia, so I felt confident that this was the perfect time to embark on a new edition.”
Want to learn some of the Redskins franchise’s great history? Well, in Richman’s historical work, you will enjoy learning “the 1937 Redskins, who won an NFL championship in their inaugural year in the nation’s capital, featured four future Hall of Fame players – quarterback/halfback Sammy Baugh, wide receiver Wayne Millner, running back Cliff Battles, and lineman Turk Edwards – and a head coach who was enshrined in Canton: Ray Flaherty.”
Richman writes with the Redskins/Commanders fan in mind, hoping to help you learn the history of the organization.
“I’m hoping to educate readers on the long and storied history of the team through season-by-season summaries starting with its inception in 1932 through the 2025 season, bios of the greatest players in franchise history, and sidebars with compelling stories people are unlikely to know,” he said.
How good were the Redskins during Joe Gibbs’ first tenure as head coach?
“When the Redskins began the 1981 season 0-5, Joe Gibbs turned to a single-back offense with John Riggins alternating with Joe Washington, finished 8-8 in `81, and proceeded to lead the Redskins through a glory period consisting of three Super Bowl wins, five NFC East titles, and eight playoff seasons. The Redskins’ 140-65-0 record, which included a 16–5 postseason mark, equals a .680 winning percentage that was among the NFL’s best during the 12-season span when Gibbs coached the team (1981-92)."
Mike Richman’s books make great Christmas gifts for other fans you know. Or, if someone close to you asks what you might like for Christmas, I highly recommend suggesting one of Richman’s books on Washington’s NFL history.
Richman has authored the following:
