Two weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the Washington Commanders’ pass defense looks much like its 2025 self. That’s not a compliment. Despite having a new defensive coordinator and some fresh faces on that side of the ball, explosive plays and wide-open receivers have plagued the Commanders in back-to-back losses to the Eagles and Cowboys.
Could help be on the way soon?

Amos, Washington’s second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, played in 10 games as a rookie last season, making eight starts, before fracturing his fibula in a Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions.
Amos began training camp
on the physically unable to perform list before he was activated on Aug. 7. On Aug. 8, Amos injured his ankle on the same leg and didn’t practice again. The Commanders placed him on injured reserve to begin the season, meaning he is out for at least the first four games.
Amos traveled with the Commanders to Dallas in Week 2. When asked about Amos’s potential return, head coach Dan Quinn hasn’t offered much. The soonest he could return is Week 5, when the Commanders host the New York Giants.
Fans should probably be patient with Amos when he returns, whether it’s Week 5 or later. He essentially practiced one day in training camp. Washington also has a new defense. Currently, the Commanders have five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster: Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau, and Isaac Yiadom. Douglas, Moreau and Yiadom have all signed with Washington since July. Sainristil has struggled mightily to start this season and is Pro Football Focus’ 96th-ranked cornerback out of 946 cornerbacks. Robertson has played well thus far in his first season with Washington.
Whether Amos returns in Week 5 or later, the Commanders will be eager to get him back on the field.
