“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season that recalls the previous game between Washington and the Commanders’ next opponent.
San Francisco 27, Washington 10: Week 17, Dec. 31, 2023
San Francisco nearly doubled Washington in yards and time of possession as it easily defeated the Commanders 27-10 on Sunday at Northwest Stadium in Landover.
The 49ers ran the ball down the Commanders’ throats all day, totaling 184 rushing yards while Washington managed just 62.
The Commanders’ defense offered little resistance to 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 230 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Purdy’s two-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel put San Francisco ahead 10-0 in the first quarter. In the final quarter, with over nine minutes remaining, Purdy connected
on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk for the game’s final score and a 27-10 lead.
Sam Howell connected with Terry McLaurin on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 4:33 remaining in the first half, tying the game at 10-10. However, the 49ers took control, scoring on Jake Moody’s 22-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the half, and the Commanders never threatened again.

Howell was limited to 169 passing yards and threw two interceptions, as Washington managed only 21:47 of the time of possession while San Francisco held the ball for 38:13. Elijah Mitchell led the 49ers with 80 rushing yards on 17 carries. Aiyuk led the 49ers with 114 receiving yards on his seven receptions. Terry McLaurin led Washington with 61 receiving yards, and Brian Robinson Jr. gained 44 rushing yards on nine carries.
With the win, the 49ers improved to 12-4, while Washington fell to 4-12, knowing its next game would likely be Ron Rivera’s last as Washington Head of Player Personnel and Head Coach.
