The Washington Commanders returned to practice on Wednesday. It was the team’s first practice since Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, which saw the Commanders lose multiple starters due to injury. One of those injured players is quarterback Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left (non-throwing) elbow just before halftime. It’s the same elbow that Daniels dislocated last November.
Washington already ruled out Daniels for Sunday’s home opener against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Marcus Mariota will get the start.
Head coach Dan Quinn offered the latest update on Daniels Wednesday.
“I know there’s still probably a lot of questions about Jayden, and he’s seeing another specialist today, so I’ll hold off answering any
questions about his timeline to return until we get all the info,” Quinn said about Daniels. “But, like I said on Monday, he’ll be out Sunday."
Quinn was later asked about his confidence level in the quarterback room if Daniels’ injury is long-term.
“Yeah, I’m not gonna assume on the timeline,” Quinn responded. “Once I know I’ll share it with you to go, but I think for me just to say this many weeks or not I'd rather wait on that and let’s get all the info. But that said, I also say yeah, we have a lot of confidence in what we do and what we’ve been doing. And so, when you’re into that system that long, that makes a difference. But as far as a timeline and what or whom else to add or not, we’ll wait on that.”
While that may sound like coachspeak — and some of it was — the Commanders probably have no idea yet how long Daniels will be out. After meeting with multiple specialists and getting different opinions, Daniels and the team will meet to determine the best course of action for Daniels’ long-term career — not necessarily the 2026 NFL season.
