The NFC East is generally must-see TV for prime-time matchups. Whether it’s the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, or Washington Commanders, all are popular prime-time matchups, especially when they face off against one another.
The Commanders and Eagles are slated for a Week 8 rematch at Northwest Stadium. That game is scheduled for Sunday Night Football. But according to Rob Tornoe of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the NFL is considering moving the NFC East showdown off Sunday Night Football.
The Commanders (1-3-1) and Eagles (2-3) have won a combined three games so far this season. And while these matchups are usually competitive—Philadelphia won 24-22 in Week 1—this rematch has less appeal after their collective slow starts.
The NFL requires 12 days’ notice for any change. That would mean Oct. 20 is the deadline. The Commanders play the undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Monday night before getting a bye in Week 7. The Eagles host the Carolina Panthers this week, before hosting the Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 7.
Washington’s game against Philadelphia is its only scheduled Sunday Night Football appearance this season. The Commanders have three games—Weeks 16-18—where the time and TV have yet to be announced.
Perhaps a Washington upset in Week 6 could change things. Don’t rule it out. Remember, in Week 3, the Commanders shocked the NFL world by handing the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks their first loss with backup quarterback Marcus Mariota under center.
