The Washington Commanders
, along with every other team in the NFL, were tasked with trimming their 90-man training camp roster down to a 53-man version. Each team will carry 53 players on its active roster during the 2026 season, and while roster cuts happened on Sunday, each team’s overall landscape will continue to change over the next few days as it decides whether to sign a player another team let go.As part of this roster trimming, many players will find themselves on various injury lists. Some will move to the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means they can be reactivated at any time. Some will be placed on injured reserve if their injury is serious enough to keep them out of action for at least four weeks. Players on these
lists do not count against the final 53-man roster count.
While deciding which players to keep and which to let go, the Commanders also addressed a few injured players. Second-year cornerback Trey Amos and veteran running back Jeremy McNichols are on IR. Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. was sent to the PUP list.
Amos appeared in 10 games in 2025 before he broke his fibula, prematurely ending his rookie campaign. He returned to practice this summer, but sprained his ankle on the same leg that was broken shortly after that. He is not expected to miss significant time with the Commanders, citing caution as the reason he was placed on IR.
McNichols sustained a quadriceps injury during a training camp practice and is expected to remain on IR until his circumstances change. No surgery has been recommended at this time, but rest and physical therapy will help him rehab the muscle and get back on the field.
Both players are eligible to return after Week 4.
Wise suffered a quadriceps injury during the Commanders’ Week 2 loss to the Green Bay Packers in 2025. He was carted off the field and ended up needing surgery. He is still rehabbing the injury, but being placed on the PUP list means that he can be activated as soon as the team thinks he is ready.
The Commanders were hit hard by injuries in 2025, and starting the season with players already on IR doesn’t bode well. McNichols will be especially missed on special teams, but his knowledge and leadership will still matter in the locker room. Wise is expected to return sooner rather than later, and Amos is likely to return quickly as well.
Of the injuries, Amos’ injury is the most concerning because Washington lacks depth at the position.
