The Washington Commanders headed off to London on Tuesday evening for their Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Before leaving Virginia, general manager Adam Peters was busy again, first officially signing veteran running back Austin Ekeler.
Head coach Dan Quinn spoke about Washington re-signing Ekeler on Monday. The Commanders made it official. In a corresponding move, they placed linebacker Leo Chenal on injured reserve. Chenal suffered a fractured bone in his neck in Sunday’s upset win over the Seahawks. He underwent season-ending surgery on Monday.
In another move, Washington signed veteran defensive end Charles Snowden to the practice squad. The 6-foot-6, 25-pound Snowden is a native of Silver Spring, Maryland, and played high school
football in Washington, D.C., at the St. Albans School. He played collegiately at the University of Virginia, where he was a three-year starter for the Cavaliers and had six sacks and 10 tackles for loss in his final college season, which ended due to injury after eight games.
Snowden went undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft and signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. He spent his rookie season on their practice squad and appeared in two games. After being waived during final cuts in Aug. 2022, Snowden signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad. After the season, he signed a reserve/futures deal with the Bucs and was waived during final cuts.
He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders late in 2023 and would spend the next two seasons there. In Las Vegas, Snowden appeared in 31 games and made 18 starts over two seasons, recording 67 tackles, including eight for loss, 4.5 sacks and 11 quarterback hits.
Washington officially announced Snowden’s signing, but NFL reporter Matt Zenitz first reported the news and said that while he’ll start with the practice squad, the expectation is he’ll eventually end up on the active roster.

That’s certainly interesting because the Commanders currently have excellent depth at edge in Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, Dorance Armstrong, Joshua Josephs and Javontae Jean-Baptiste.
