The Washington Commanders are currently dealing with several injuries. Star left tackle Laremy Tunsil underwent surgery for his torn pec last week. His recovery timeline is unknown, but he will be out for a significant period of time at a minimum.
The Commanders are dealing with several other injuries, but most appear minor, and the team is taking a cautious approach. However, head coach Dan Quinn did reveal another injury that could have long-term ramifications.
Third-year defensive tackle Johnny Newton missed practice on Tuesday, and the Commanders added veteran defensive tackle Maurice Hurst to the roster. On Wednesday, Quinn revealed that Newton was dealing with a pec injury and was in New York to see a specialist to determine the extent of
the injury.
The timing of this injury is tough news for Newton. The 2024 second-round pick is entering a make-or-break season and is already behind others at his position. In last week’s preseason game, Newton played while most of Washington’s starters had the night off.
If Newton is out for a significant period, it could open a roster spot for someone like Ricky Barber Jr. or veterans Shy Tuttle and Byron Cowart. Barner is entering his second NFL season, while Tuttle and Cowart are veterans. Tuttle was with the team last season, and Washington likes him as a run stopper. Cowart was signed recently and played well in last week’s preseason game.
