The Washington Commanders received some good news on Tuesday. Center Nick Allegretti and tight end John Bates returned to practice after missing most of training camp thus far. Allegretti was dealing with a strained calf, while Bates had a hamstring injury.
But while Washington got Allegretti and Bates back, they were still missing others as they returned to the practice field after time off. Starting edge rushers Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson missed Tuesday’s practice. Head coach Dan Quinn met with the media before practice but didn’t indicate the duo wouldn’t practice.
Washington officially signed four players on Tuesday, and three of them are at positions where the Commanders are dealing with injuries. Running back Jerome Ford was placed
on the reserve/injured list. Remember, Jeremy McNichols is also dealing with a quad injury, which led Washington to sign veteran Craig Reynolds.
Defensive tackle Johnny Newton did not practice on Tuesday after playing in Friday’s game. The Commanders signed defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II to provide depth. Also, linebacker Jordan Magee missed Tuesday’s practice. Washington signed another veteran, linebacker Krys Barnes.
Ford faced an uphill battle to make Washington’s 53-man roster. After rookies Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry Jr. shined in the preseason opener, those odds grew even larger.
Newton, a 2024 second-round pick, didn’t exactly shine in Friday’s preseason opener. It’s unlikely he’s on the bubble, but missing time at this point could help improve Ricky Barber Jr’s chances of making the roster.
Finally, Magee is Washington’s fourth linebacker. He also excels on special teams. If he is to miss any time, that could mean increased snaps for Ale Kaho, who was extremely impressive in the preseason opener.
Quinn will speak to the media again on Wednesday, and we’ll follow up on Washington’s injury situation heading into the second preseason game.
