After signing veteran receiver Stefon Diggs, the Washington Commanders actually had decent depth at the wide receiver position. But that means some people in that room won't make the final roster. Recently, a CBS article proposed that one receiver Washington could cut is veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson. Here is what they had to say:
“Not long after he played a key role in the Rams winning the 2022 Super Bowl with career highs in receptions (50), receiving yards (802) and touchdowns (6), Van Jefferson was briefly the No. 1 receiver in Los Angeles. During a Cooper Kupp absence, Jefferson was supposed to take over as the top target, but Puka Nacua's emergence derailed his Rams tenure.
Since then, Jefferson has been a part-time starter for the Falcons,
Steelers and Titans. He could carve out that same role with the Commanders, but it could be difficult considering the team's wide receiver depth.”
On Washington’s most recent depth chart, Jefferson is listed as a third-string receiver behind Terry McLaurin, Diggs, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, Jaylin Lane and Treylon Burks. All of them except Diggs have previous experience playing with the Washington Commanders. They also drafted wide receiver Antonio Williams out of Clemson in the third round, who has impressed throughout training camp and the preseason. This leaves little room for Jefferson on the roster, making him a primary candidate to be cut.
As a veteran who has consistently been on an NFL roster throughout his career and usually has multiple starts each season, if the Commanders choose to release him, he will most likely be picked up by someone at some point in the season.
