Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters joined Sports Junkies on Friday morning for his weekly radio spot and provided an update on injured quarterback Jayden Daniels. Daniels, who dislocated his left (non-throwing) elbow in last week’s loss at Dallas, will not need surgery, and the team hasn’t considered a stint on injured reserve.
“As of right now, surgery is not on the table, and we haven’t discussed IR (injured reserve),” Peters said. “So, it’s just a matter of how we’re going to get him back on the field, and that’s still to be determined.”
Considering other possible outcomes, this is wonderful news for Daniels and the Commanders.
Unfortunately, Washington is also dealing with multiple other injuries, too. With Washington set to face
the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in Sunday’s home opener, Daniels and starting safety Nick Cross have already been ruled out. Cross suffered an internal injury last week, but finished the game.
In that game, right guard Sam Cosmi, defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and left tackle Brandon Coleman all left with injuries and did not return. Coleman has practiced all week and is good to go on Sunday. Kinlaw, who injured his shoulder, has yet to practice this week.
Cosmi suffered a concussion on Washington’s final drive, when rookie running back Kaytron Allen accidentally rammed into him. Cosmi is in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Peters provided an update on Cosmi during Friday’s morning show and included tight end Chig Okonkwo and linebacker Frankie Luvu, who each missed Week 2 with injuries.
“With Cosmi and Chig and Luvu, I think it’s going to be a long shot for this week,” Peters said. "Kinlaw is looking a little bit better, and we’ll find out today on the practice how he responds, but I think those are the guys that will be a long shot, at least for this week.”
Peters was asked if veteran Andrew Wylie, a longtime former starter at guard and tackle for the Chiefs and Commanders, would step in at right guard. Peters wouldn’t commit to a name, only saying Washington had several players it’s comfortable with.
Not great news for an 0-2 team about to face the 2-0 Seahawks on Sunday. Luvu is one of Washington’s captains and the heart of the defense, while Okonkwo was a top offseason offensive acquisition. Cosmi is the Commanders’ top offensive lineman outside of the already injured Laremy Tunsil.
Washington will provide an official final injury report later on Friday.
