The Washington Commanders opened Day 5 of training camp with some surprising news. Veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon retired and was placed on the reserve/retired list. In a corresponding move, the Commanders signed cornerback Fabian Moreau.
Moreau is a familiar name to Washington fans, having spent his first four NFL seasons with the Redskins/Football Team after being drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of UCLA. Like Witherspoon, also a fellow 2017 third-round pick, Moreau is entering his 10th NFL season in 2026.
Moreau was on the field for the Commanders.
What happened in practice? Well, it was another good day for quarterback Jayden Daniels. The third-year quarterback continues to look more comfortable with each passing
day. That's not to say it was a bad day for the offense, but Daniels' progression through each practice, throwing to different receivers, is notable.
We know Daniels stood out? Who else did? Four standouts from Day 5 of Commanders training camp.
QB Jayden Daniels
It was another terrific day for Daniels. You can see his comfort growing with each practice. Washington's defense keeps Daniels moving and on his toes. Odafe Oweh has been after Daniels all camp. Daniels did a good job of getting rid of the football on one Oweh rush Tuesday. It's encouraging to see Daniels' daily growth in David Blough's offense.
Really impressive start for Daniels today. Only two incompletions: the first was a throwaway during two minute drills, and the other was a drop by Lane. It would have been a hell of a catch, but it was in a spot where Lane could have made a tough grab

WR Luke McCaffrey
We haven't heard a lot from McCaffrey since camp started last week. That's not to say he's struggled. On Tuesday, it was his day. McCaffrey made multiple plays, including a long touchdown. It was the only time the first-team offense got into the end zone. McCaffrey is lining up at multiple spots, which only increases his versatility once the season begins.

EDGE K'Lavon Chaisson
Everyone has talked about Oweh for the past week. Understandably so. But K'Lavon Chaisson has been extremely active. Monday was a good day for him when the pads were on, and he followed that up with another strong showing on Tuesday. Chaisson can rush the passer and play the run. He's a physical presence that you can't truly appreciate until the pads are on.

K Drew Stevens
Incumbent Jake Moody was perfect in training camp until Tuesday, when he missed two kicks. Undrafted rookie Drew Stevens was running neck-and-neck with Moody, but missed a couple over the weekend. On Monday, both were perfect. However, on Tuesday, Stevens backed up a strong performance on Monday with an even better one on Tuesday. He made all six field goals, including a 49-yarder and a 56-yarder, while Moody missed two. These are the types of days Stevens needs to show Washington why he should be the kicker. This competition will still likely come down to the games, but Stevens made a statement on Tuesday.
