While the Washington Commanders ultimately came up just short in their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, there certainly were some positives to take away. One of those positives was rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams's first NFL touchdown.
He called his touchdown, which put the Commanders in position to tie the game with a minute left in the game, “surreal” and discussed what it was like to play in his first NFL game and start building confidence on the field with the rest of Washington’s offense.
“First game, good to get in there and make some plays, confidence with the guys,” Williams said. “I just, you know, want to build that confidence like I was saying, and when it comes to me, I’m going to make most of those plays. First game, you got
to envision things in your head before it happens.”
The two-point conversion was ultimately unsuccessful as the Commanders attempted a shovel pass to tight end John Bates. However, it appeared running back Rachaad White was open in the flat and could have gotten in the end zone. At the very least, he had a better chance of converting than Bates on that play.
Washington’s play call on the two-point conversion to tie the game was not the only point of conversation. On the drive before Williams’ touchdown, quarterback Jayden Daniels connected with receiver Stefon Diggs for a touchdown. After the score, Diggs jumped on the goalpost, which is an automatic 15-yard penalty. That took away Washington’s ability to go for a two-point conversion, which head coach Dan Quinn said they planned to do after the game.
The Commanders have a lot to clean up after this game as they prepare for their second division matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday (4:25 p.m. / FOX). Both teams are coming off division losses and will be looking to avoid going 0-2 in the NFC East to start the season.
