The Washington Commanders need help on the interior of their offensive line. Specifically, Washington needs help at center. Right guard is in tremendous hands with Sam Cosmi, a potential All-Pro candidate. Washington’s center position has been an ongoing debate since February, when the Commanders surprisingly released two-year starter Tyler Biadasz.
GM Adam Peters tried to sign free agent Tyler Linderbaum, but the Raiders outbid everyone. Instead, Washington would turn to veteran Nick Allegretti. Instead of adding another experienced center to push Allegretti, or at least provide depth, Washington used a sixth-round pick on Matt Gulbin. With Allegretti injured all of training camp, the Commanders have used the combination of journeyman Julian
Good-Jones and Gulbin. The pair has a combined two career NFL snaps, and the experiment has gone as expected.
Making matters worse, star left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps, which meant Brandon Coleman had to move back to left tackle. Coleman was expected to win the starting left guard job. Questions remain with returning starter Chris Paul.
The good news is that Peters should have options. All 32 NFL teams have until 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday to cut their rosters to 53 players. That means there will be players available who could help Washington. There’s also the trade market. To avoid missing out, Peters could send a draft pick to a team for a player no longer in that team’s plans. Former Raiders’ second-round pick Jackson Powers-Johnson is a popular name to watch, but it looks like he’ll start for Las Vegas at guard in 2026.
While there may be no perfect answers available, there will be options. Here are five potential options to watch for Washington over the next few days. The Commanders could use another reserve tackle, but for this exercise, we’re focusing on interior offensive line help, which is more urgent.
C/G Graham Glasgow
We’ve written about Glasgow previously. A 10-year NFL veteran with plenty of starting experience at guard and center, Glasgow is currently a free agent. Sure, he’s on the older side, but he could be a perfect one-year stopgap. Glasgow may want to be guaranteed a starting position, which, in that case, may not make him a fit for the Commanders. He recently said he’d entertain a callfrom Washington. Glasgow has appeared in 147 career NFL games and made 136 starts.
Texans C/G Jake Andrews
A former Patriots’ fourth-round pick, Andrews was released after the 2025 NFL Draft. The Texans claimed him off waivers, and he started 16 games at center for them. However, Houston made several moves this offseason, and Andrews is now on the outside looking in. Andrews is expected to be cut by Houston, so he could be an option for the Commanders. Andrews may be the perfect addition in the sense that he could be insurance for Allegretti, while also providing depth at guard.
Texans C/G Jarrett Patterson
Another victim of Houston’s offseason moves, Jarrett Patterson could also be available. A sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Patterson started seven games at center as a rookie. He has started 14 more games over the last two seasons between center and guard. The Texans may listen to offers for both Andrews and Patterson. Both could also be released. Patterson is another player who could be insurance for Allegretti, while also providing depth, versatility and experience at all three interior positions.
Broncos C/G Calvin Throckmorton
The Broncos have arguably the NFL’s best offensive line. They also have an outstanding center in Luke Wattenberg and a top backup in Alex Forsyth. With both expected to make Denver’s roster, veteran Calvin Throckmorton could be available. The 30-year-old is not subject to waivers and could be an option for the Commanders. He’s played guard and center in the NFL, appearing in 58 career games with 27 starts. Throckmorton filled in for the Broncos at center this summer and did a good job. Denver doesn’t want to move on from Throckmorton, but may not have the room to keep him. Another player who’d be a great backup center for Washington, while also giving them depth and experience at guard, too.
Seahawks C Olu Oluwatimi
Perhaps the most intriguing player on this list is Olu Oluwatimi. A native of Prince George’s County, Maryland, this would be a homecoming for Oluwatimi, who also played collegiately at Virginia before finishing his career at Michigan. Washington could have drafted Oluwatimi in 2023, but instead chose Ricky Stromberg, who is not even on an NFL roster. Oluwatimi is blocked in Seattle. Jalen Sundell is the starting center. Oluwatimi is going into the final year of his rookie deal. The 6-foot-3, 309-pound Oluwatimi would be worth Peters calling Seattle GM John Schneider and offering a Day 3 draft pick. Oluwatimi isn't just insurance for Allegretti; he could start immediately and allow the Commanders to potentially move Allegretti back to left guard. Oluwatimi has been mentioned as a potential trade option for center-needy teams this offseason. Seattle is not waiving Oluwatimi, so if Washington wants him, it would have to make Seattle an offer.
